Before Stonewall: The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community (2019) – In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, leading to three nights of rioting by New York’s LGBT community. With this outpouring of courage and unity, the gay liberation movement had begun. Newly restored, Before Stonewall pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic story of survival, love, persecution and resistance experienced by LGBT Americans since the early 1900s. (Available to rent on Amazon Prime)

The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) – A true twentieth-century trailblazer, Harvey Milk was an outspoken human rights activist and one of the first openly gay U.S. politicians elected to public office; even after his assassination in 1978, he continues to inspire disenfranchised people around the world. (Available to rent on Amazon Prime)

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017) – As she fights the tide of violence against trans women, activist Victoria Cruz probes the suspicious 1992 death of her friend Marsha P. Johnson. (Available for streaming on Netflix)

Paris is Burning (1990) – Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, this film chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary on the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America. (Available on YouTube)

Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement (2009) – After 42 years, feisty and delightful lesbian couple Edie and Thea are finally getting married. From the early ‘60s to the present day, the tireless community activists persevere through many battles, both personal and political. These two compassionate and brave women are a model of courage and strength that speaks to everyone, of any age. (Available for streaming on Amazon Prime)
