Duke Department of Population Health Sciences Assistant Professor Charles Muiruri, PhD, has been honored with the 2024 Duke HIV/AIDS Interdisciplinary Research Training Program in AIDS (IRTPA) T32 Outstanding Leadership in Scientific Mentoring Award.
This recognition, presented by the Duke School of Medicine and the Duke Center for AIDS Research, celebrates early-career Duke faculty members who demonstrate leadership in educating and mentoring the next generation of scientists. The award highlights those mentors who focus on interdisciplinary training and broadening participation in the biomedical workforce.
IRTPA program co-directors Nathan Thielman, MD, MPH, and Guido Ferrari, MD, presented this year's award to Muiruri, who is also an Assistant Research Professor at the Duke Global Health Institute. During the nomination process, his colleagues praised him as a "superb mentor to both domestic and international trainees," noting his ability to provide a balance of caring support and encouragement for each mentee to achieve their best performance.
"I am honored to be recognized for this award," Muiriri said. "My mentors always instilled the idea of 'paying it forward,' which is why the bug of mentoring has bitten me."
Muiruri aims to improve the quality of healthcare and reduce disparities for individuals with multiple chronic conditions, both in the U.S. and internationally. His current research seeks to enhance the quality of cardiovascular disease prevention and care among people living with HIV in North Carolina and Tanzania. He is also an adjunct lecturer at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College in Moshi, Tanzania.
