DPHS’ Sudha Raman, PhD, recently served as a co-author on new clinical practice guidelines detailing evidence-based approaches to safely prescribe opioids for children and adolescents with acute pain in outpatient settings.
The guidelines, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, describe ways to treat acute pain in the pediatric population, along with minimizing risks associated with opioids, such as usage disorder, poisoning, and overdose. Raman also co-authored the technical report on the guidelines alongside Duke Pediatrics’ Michael Smith, MD, MCSE.
“Though understudied, this effort to synthesize the clinical trial evidence, expert opinion, and clinical landscape of acute pain management in children is a great example of how we can use available evidence to both guide current practice and focus our research effort on the gaps,” said Raman.
