April is Celebrate Diversity Month started in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity surrounding us all. By celebrating our differences and similarities, organizers hope that people will get a deeper understanding of each other.

April is Autism Acceptance Month, established to raise awareness about the developmental disorder that affects an individual's normal development of social and communication skills.

The DPHS DEI Committee welcomes you to come as you are to this informal Connection & Conversation event. During which we will gather and discuss the events of the past month, including but not limited to: the eleventh and twelfth transwomen being killed by violent means so far this year; the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s unjust death; the increase of hate crimes and harassment towards Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, including the Atlanta mass shooting which killed six women of Asian descent; and the protests sparked from Sarah Everard’s kidnapping and death.

We would like to express our strongest solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We denounce these repeated, horrific and racist attacks against our AAPI friends and family, and in particular yesterday’s violent attack against Asian Americans in Atlanta,Georgia. We are committed to addressing racism and xenophobia within DPHS and fostering a climate of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our department and across Duke. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes, communities and workplace.

Recognizing all that has happened in the month of March and during the past year, our March 2021 Newsletter celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8th) and Women’s History Month. The newsletter also includes resources and ideas on how to celebrate and take time for meaningful conversations with each other, friends, and family. Read  the full newsletter!

February is Black History Month and we encourage everyone to take time to celebrate Black Joy. This month's newsletter provides resources on how to do so at home and in the community (physically distanced of course!). In February, we also celebrate many cultural holidays including the Lunar New Year. Read the full newsletter!

The Department of Population Health Sciences hosted a Diversity Supplement Panel in February 2020 which featured presentations from two NIH program officers providing details regarding diversity supplements. After the Department of Population Health Sciences (DPHS) DEI Committee was formed in May 2019, the committee began planning for a department-wide climate survey.
