Spring 2025 Qualitative Research Courses in the Department of Population Health Sciences
POPHS 910: Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Design, Leadership, and Dissemination
- Spring 2025: Tu/Th, 1:30 to 3:00
- Eligibility: PhD student. Faculty and medical students can audit. No prerequisite.
- Instructor: Amy Corneli, PhD, MPH
- Location: Department of Population Health Sciences, 215 Morris Street, Classroom B
- Overview: This course prepares learners to serve as a principal investigator of qualitative descriptive research studies or of mixed/multi-method studies that include a qualitative descriptive research component. The course focuses on three main areas—
- Designing qualitative descriptive research studies.
- Providing oversight to research staff during data collection and analysis.
- Writing up study findings for peer-reviewed publications and participant summaries.
POPHS 818: Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Data Collection and Analysis
- Spring 2025: Tu/Th, 11:45 to 1:15
- Eligibility: Graduate student. Faculty and medical students can audit. No prerequisite.
- Instructors: Amy Corneli, PhD, MPH and Brian Perry, MPH
- Location: Department of Population Health Sciences, 215 Morris Street, Classroom B
- Overview: This introductory course prepares learners to serve as a research associate for qualitative descriptive research studies or for mixed/multi-method studies that include a qualitative descriptive research component. This course is also appropriate for future investigators of qualitative descriptive studies who wish to learn skills in qualitative research data collection and analysis. The course focuses on three main areas—
- Conducting qualitative descriptive research studies, with an emphasis on innovative data collection approaches and interviewing skills.
- Managing data.
- Conducting applied thematic analysis.

Qualitative Research Courses offered as part of the Department of Population Health Sciences Summer Institute
QUALITATIVE STUDY DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND DISSEMINATION FOR STUDIES IN MEDICINE AND POPULATION HEALTH SCIENCES
Instructor: Amy Corneli, PhD, MPH, Professor in Population Health Sciences
This workshop will highlight the fundamental principles and common pitfalls in the design, implementation, and dissemination of qualitative descriptive research, focusing on the areas of medicine and population health sciences.
Workshop Outcomes: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the various approaches to qualitative inquiry
- Describe how to select the best design and method to answer qualitative research questions
- Apply key principles of questionnaire design and interviewing for gathering rich qualitative data
- Describe essential information to include in participant summaries and peer-reviewed manuscripts that report qualitative research findings
- Avoid common pitfalls in qualitative research
Recommended Audience: For those interested in designing, conducting, and writing up qualitative research at the investigator level, either for studies using only qualitative research or studies using qualitative research as one component/study aim of a larger study.
APPLIED QUALITATIVE THEMATIC ANALYSIS
Instructor: Brian Perry, MPH, Research Practice Manager
During this workshop, participants will be introduced to applied strategies for developing deductive and inductive codebooks; applying codes to text; identifying themes; and ensuring rigor throughout the process of reading, categorizing, and interpreting qualitative data. Rapid analysis methods and strategies for maintaining rigor during this process will also be discussed. This workshop includes an introduction to NVivo, a qualitative data analysis program for organizing and displaying data.
Workshop Outcomes: This workshop will focus on qualitative data analysis. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the general steps in using applied thematic data analysis to analyze qualitative data
- Apply concepts related to coding and identifying themes in qualitative data
- Understand how the analysis approach should be fit-for-purpose based on the objectives of the study and intent of the data
- Use NVivo to code and display data
- Explain the benefits and limitations of using computer software to assist in qualitative data analysis
Recommended Audience: For students and social scientists carrying out qualitative research involving text-based and/or transcribed interview and focus group data using semi-structured data collection tools.
